The European Society of Women in Theological Research (ESWTR) was founded in Switzerland in 1986 and now has around 650 members organised in more than 25 national groups.

The Swiss section of the ESWTR currently has around 60 women scholars working in theology, Jewish studies and religious studies. We meet once or twice a year with the aim of supporting women in their research and strengthening professional networks.

As a member, you pay an annual membership fee of CHF 70 (CHF 40 for students and those on a low income) and automatically receive a subscription to the annual ESWTR Journal.

The website and the electronic newsletters published in spring and autumn keep you informed about ESWTR activities and news across Europe. An international conference is held every two years.

On Friday, 27 November 2026, the 40th anniversary of the ESWTR will be celebrated in Zurich as part of the next Swiss Section meeting.

Special announcements:

• ESWTR Switzerland is delighted that ESWTR member Rita Perintfalvi has been awarded the Herbert Haag Prize 2026. More information about the award ceremony, which took place on Sunday, 22 March 2026, at the Lukaskirche in Lucerne, can be found here.
• The Swiss Section also remains proud of the recognition given to its members Dr Dr h.c. Doris Strahm and Silvia Strahm Bernet, who received the Herbert Haag Prize 2024 for Freedom in the Church.
